What is the Master Gardener Program?
The Master Gardener Program is a national program of trained volunteers who work in partnership with their county Extension office to extend information throughout their community. The first Master Gardener program was started in Washington State in 1973. Master Gardeners provide only research-based information, giving the public accurate and tested answers to their questions.
Qualification for Trainees
Master Gardener trainees should have a basic knowledge of, or interest in gardening; enthusiasm for acquiring and sharing horticultural knowledge and skills with the community; and a willingness to participate in educational activities and enough time to do so.
About the Training
In Island County, Master Gardener training takes place every other year over the course of six weeks in January and February. Our next training will take place beginning in January 2011. The six week training session is held two days per week from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Classes are taught by WSU faculty and veteren Master Gardeners. The cost of training is $75.00.
Those interested in becoming a Master Gardener need to fill out an application and submit it to the Extension office by no later than November 19, 2010. All applicants will be interviewed and from among those interviewed 20 will be accepted into training.
