Missed this segment between Brown Point and Utsalady because
the satellites weren't still high enough when we got to here on
the English Boom to Brown Point adventure. This is the first of
several "make-up" segments I did today. I got here early enough
that measuring was easy.
One very exciting thing happened on this segment. While I was heading up the beach, I saw an adolescent Bald Eagle fly from the trees ahead of me. Not too unusual, but on the way back, he was sitting on a bare branch hanging out over the beach. As I got closer, he stayed put. Now I was close enough that I started doing the "deer walk", walk a few steps in one direction, pause, then a few steps in another direction. Eventually, I was standing about 40 ft away from him. He finally was starting to get a little nervous so he spread his wings to fly away. No... maybe stay a little longer, no... spread his wings again... no.. stay yet a little longer. After about about a minute of flapping his wings, turning his head, and in general posing for some of the best photos ever, he casually flew away. Oh, did I mention... since I was sans-volunteer, the camera was not along for this segment. I am firmly convinced that animals know when you don't have a camera, and only give you the best shots then. Etched in my mind forever. |
