We saw a eagle leaving the beach just ahead. When we got there we saw that it seems like some spawning fish made a bad choice. | ||

BEACH HARDENING SURVEY: June 05, 2002. Scott Chase assisting Don. Covered area south of the boat ramp at Camano Island
Yacht Club to just north of the homes on Onomac beach.
10:00: Met at boat ramp. Deposited one car back at top of Onomac road. 10:30: Began walking south from Yacht Club ramp. 10:35: Began monitoring at wood bulkhead just south of metal mesh enclosed rock. 10:45: End of bulkheads. Hundreds of small fish, about 6" long (herring?), behind a log on the beach. Still fresh; must have been stranded by tide. Eagles had fed on them. 10:47: Measured large rocks on beach; back to bulkheads. 10:55: Several outfalls bunched together leading to beach and diverter. Another similar diverter not far south of this bunch. 11:05-11:30: Rockaway and Woodland communities. Lots of bulkheads, wood and riprap. Followed by gravel beach with a few boat-rail sections leading to the water, followed by more bulkheads. Encountered two different men homeowners. First was polite, and we did some talking and explaining to, and he was interested. Began talking to second, and he asked if we were "the beach hardening project". I asked if he had read it in the paper, which he had, and assumed that's what we were when he saw the GPS unit on Don's back. He talked quite a bit, and was very interested. A pleasant experience. Did not run into any others. 11:35: Long stretch of empty beach. 11:45: Stream outflow, with stepped culverts coming down bank, and a barred entry to the concrete culvert at the bottom. Little amount of water coming out of it. 12:00: Came upon a survey marker on the beach. Took GPS reading and photo. 12:02-12:15: mostly empty beach. Measured some large rocks along the way. There was a small wood bulkhead with short stairwell and "deck" on top. To north of that there was a long set of trolley tracks that proceeded up the bank to the top at a steep slope. 12:30: Left beach, proceeded up road to main highway. Arrived at deposited car: 12:40. 12:50: Arrived back at ramp next to Camano Island Yacht Club. |
