Early in the 1800's, Purple Loosestrife arrived in eastern North America for the same reason countless other invasive plants have been moved around the globe...people thought the plant was beautiful and they took its seeds with them when they headed to new lands. Also, seeds were contained in the bags of soil used for ballast on European ships...another common means of dispersal for invasive species.
As a hardy perennial, that can produce more than 2 million seeds in a single season, the plant spread quickly. And it continues to spread today. The largest infestation in Washington state covers an estimated 23,000 wetland acres in Grant County. |
